2019 Syrah, Tierra Alta Vineyard

2019 Syrah, Tierra Alta Vineyard

“Cool-climate notes of red and black fruits, white pepper, cedarwood, and iron all emerge from the 2019 Syrah Tierra Alta Vineyard, a gorgeous, multi-dimensional, savory, complex Syrah that does everything right. It might be one of the finest Syrahs I've tasted from Blair.” -  J e b   D u n n u c k

"The 2019 Syrah Tierra Alta Vineyard is a wild wine that reflects the personality of the site. At once very ripe and vegetal, the 2019 suggests that finding the right time to harvest here is likely a pretty big challenge. Super-ripe red cherry fruit, plum, tobacco, cedar and dried flowers are front and center. The flavor profile is decidedly reminiscent of Zinfandel."  ∼  Antonio Galloni

Vineyards and Composition: 100% Tierra Alta Vineyard; Ballard Canyon, Santa Barbara County.

Barrel Aging and Cooperage: Twenty-six months in 100% French oak (228L Burgundy) barrels for aging.

Winemaking:  The Syrah grapes came from a very steep hillside block of Clone 1 planted in shallow calcareous soils.  Located in the Ballard Canyon of Santa Barbara County with a cool marine influence and a long, cool growing season, these grapes possessed excellent purity and depth while the vineyard produced a meager 2.4 tons per acre crop with excellent concentration.  The grapes were 83% destemmed without being crushed, leaving approximately 95% whole berries and 17% whole-cluster, into two 1-ton open top fermentors and cold-soaked for five days prior to inoculation.  After the cold soak, the grapes were punched down by hand one to three times per day, for 12 days, until fermentation was complete.  The free run juice was drained off and the remaining must was basket pressed and settled before being racked into three and four year old French oak barrels for aging.  This wine was aged in barrel for an additional twenty-six months prior to being racked from barrel and bottled in January of 2022. “Cool-climate notes of red and black fruits, white pepper, cedarwood, and iron all emerge from the 2019 Syrah Tierra Alta Vineyard, a gorgeous, multi-dimensional, savory, complex Syrah that does everything right.
