Winemaking:This is usually a very popular wine with our wine club and sells out quickly!! These Petite Sirah grapes for this wine are grown on a very steep, South-West facing, rocky hillside block of the Fox Family Vineyard in the hills of Los Olivos. This tiny vineyard isplanted to the “Rockpile” clone of Petite Sirah, with the original cuttings sourced directly from the Rockpile Vineyard in Sonoma, and farmed entirely by hand. The Rockpile Vineyard sourced cuttings from the historic Seghesio Family Vineyard Home Ranch originally planted in 1895! These grapes are hand harvested, hand sorted, 100% destemmed without being crushed, leaving approximately 95% whole berries, into a small, open top fermentor. The must was cold-soaked for four days, with the addition of dry-ice, prior to inoculation with a native “Rockpile Vineyard” isolated yeast and punched down by hand one to three times per day until fermentation was complete. The free run juice was drained off and the remaining must was basket pressed and settled before being racked to two and three year old French oak barrels. This wine was aged in barrel for an additional twenty-two months prior to being racked from barrel and bottled in late August of 2022. This is a dark, inky wine with soft tannins, bright acidity, notes of black and blue fruits accented by baking spices and a touch of toasty oak. Pair this wine with any game meat, hearty steak or your favorite BBQ fare.
