2017 Syrah, Kimsey Vineyard

2017 Syrah, Kimsey Vineyard

92+ Points "Dense purple-hued, with a juicy bouquet of ripe black and blue fruits, dark chocolate, graphite, and ground pepper, it's full-bodied and has a rich, concentrated texture, good acidity, and a great finish. " ~ Jeb Dunnuck

94 Points "One of the standouts in this range, 2017 Syrah Kimsey Vineyard is terrific.  The personality of this site works so well with Blair Fox's style.  Bold and explosive, the Kimsey packs tremendous punch in its dark blue/purplish fruit.  It is a Syrah endowed with considerable energy and drive." ~ Antonio Galloni

Vineyards and Composition: 100% Kimsey Vineyard Syrah; Ballard Canyon, Santa Barbara County.

Barrel Aging and Cooperage: Twenty-two months in three year old and older French oak barrels (Sirugue and Meyrieux).

Production: 112 cases made

Winemaking:  This is our third release from this well-regarded, organically grown vineyard. The Kimsey Vineyard is planted on the cooler, south-western side of the Ballard Canyon A.V.A. Ballard Canyon has proven itself to be an outstanding area to grow world-class Syrah. I selected the 383 clone perched high on the hill planted in rocky, clay-loam soil. 2017 was the second vintage after a long drought period and produced wines with abundant flavor, character and extract. This vintage resulted in high quality wines with rich, decadent fruit and bright natural acidity. The grapes were 75% destemmed without being crushed, leaving over 95% whole berries and 25% whole-cluster, into a 1.5-ton open top

fermentor and cold-soaked for three days prior to inoculation. After the cold soak, the grapes were punched down by hand, for 13 days, until fermentation was complete. The must was basket pressed and settled before being racked into three year old and older French oak barrels for aging. This wine was aged in barrel for an additional twenty-two months prior to being racked from barrel and bottled in late August of 2019.

Bottle Aging:  This wine can be enjoyed now or cellared for an additional 8 years with proper storage.
