2013 The Ambush
This is a top barrel selection blend from all of the red varieties planted at the Fox Family Vineyard (Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel). The vineyard is densely planted, organically grown and farmed entirely by hand in the hills of Los Olivos. The steep slopes and rocky/shale soils lead to very light yields in the 2-2.75 tons/acre range with extraordinary concentration and purity of fruit. My goal is to create an Estate Blend which demonstrates the best of which this vineyard has to offer. These grapes are hand harvested, hand sorted, mostly destemmed without being crushed, leaving approximately 90% whole berries and 10% whole-cluster. The musts were cold-soaked for 3-5 days, with the addition of dry-ice, prior to inoculation and punched down by hand one to three times per day until fermentation was complete. The free run juice was drained off and the remaining must was basket pressed and settled before being racked to French oak barrels for aging. This wine was aged in barrel for an additional twenty-two months prior to being racked from barrel, blended and bottled in late August of 2015.
Robert Parker gushed about this wine describing it as, “another stunner is the 2013 The Ambush Fox Family Vineyard, which is made from 44% Grenache, 23% Syrah, 22% Petite Sirah and the rest Zinfandel. Fermented with a tiny amount of whole cluster and aged 22 months in two-year-old barrels, it’s a ripe, sexy, even voluptuous red that’s overflowing with notions of blackberries, plums, chocolate and exotic spice. It certainly made me want to pour another glass. This full-bodied, mouth-filling effort never puts a foot wrong and is always fresh and lively, all suggesting it will evolve gracefully for at least 5-7 years.” 94 Points
